Notes:
Originally issued in parts (fascicules) 1839-1842. The first three volumes have title-pages without subtitle as originally printed for these three volumes, later reprinted with the subtitle, uniform with the later volumes.
This set lacks the supplementary volume "Le Prisme" issued free to the subscribers, of which no copies with colored illustrations were issued.
Text by Achard, Balzac, Janin, Karr, Nodier, Soulié and many others.
Illustrations (408 plates, 1000 illustrations in the text) by Gavarni, Grandville, Johannot, Meissonnier and others.
The first five volumes deal with general types. The other three [6-8] contain provincial and colonial types and have title: Les Français peints par eux-mêmes; encyclopédie morale du dix-neuvième siècle. Province.
