- This paper focuses on the author A.H. de Oliveira Marques and his multi-faceted work and personality. Oliveira Marques was neither merely a medievalist, nor an author who confined himself to studying a few themes or areas of interest from the medieval period; this tends to render the study of his extensive and varied work a complex but appealing endeavor. This paper argues that to write about Oliveira Marques is, to some extent, to trace the evolution of medieval Portuguese historiography since the 1960’s, within the scope of economic and social history and studies in local and regional history. The aim of this text is to highlight the contribution of Oliveira Marques to the renewal of Portuguese Historiography in general and the effects of his opus major as a Medievalist, touching on the innovative nature of the themes explored by the author, the topicality of his historiographic conceptions, and the impact his work had within the community of professionals and on the less-specialised public.

- Este artigo enfoca o autor A. H. de Oliveira Marques e a sua obra e personalidade multifacetadas. Oliveira Marques não foi apenas um medievalista, nem um autor que se limitou a estudar alguns temas ou áreas de interesse do período medieval; isso tende a tornar o estudo de seu extenso e variado trabalho uma tarefa complexa, porém atraente. Este ensaio argumenta que escrever sobre Oliveira Marques é, em certa medida, traçar a evolução da historiografia medieval portuguesa desde os anos 60, no âmbito da história económica e social e dos estudos da história local e regional. O objetivo deste texto é destacar a contribuição de Oliveira Marques para a renovação da historiografia portuguesa em geral e os efeitos da sua grande obra como medievalista, abordando a natureza inovadora dos temas explorados pelo autor, a relevância das suas concepções historiográficas e o impacto que a sua obra teve na comunidade de profissionais e no público menos especializado.
