- This paper discusses the importance of the historian A.H. de Oliveira Marques, who over the course of some forty years of febrile activity contributed enormously to our understanding of the Portuguese First Republic period (1910-1926). After discussing his contributions, the text poses the following questions: did Oliveira Marques fail to produce a political history of the First Republic because of the many constraints that limit academics’ research and writing time, and because he had spread himself too thinly, or because he suspected—or, better, knew—that it would conflict with the positive idea he had struggled to create of the Republic? Were there simply too many negative aspects to the Republic, and to its principal figures, beginning with Afonso Costa himself, to countenance writing about?

- Este texto discute a importância do historiador A. H. de Oliveira Marques, que durante uns quarenta anos de intensa atividade contribuiu imensamente ao nosso entendimento do período da Primeira República Portuguesa (1910-1926). Depois de discutir suas contribuições, o texto apresenta as seguintes perguntas: Oliveira Marques fracassou na tentativa de produzir uma história política da Primeira República por causa das limitações do tempo que académicos podem devotar à pesquisa e à escrita, e porque ele se comprometia com demasiados projetos, ou porque ele suspeitava – ou, melhor, sabia – que isso não concordaria com a ideia positiva da República que ele lutou para criar? Haveria simplesmente demasiados aspectos negativos da República e das suas figuras principais, a começar pelo próprio Afonso Costa, com os quais lidar na escrita?
