Abstract (lang="por")
Abstract (lang="eng")
Taking into account the most recent documentation, we intend to present the history of how Fernando Pessoa’s book 'Mensagem' won the “second place” of the Prize Antero de Quental (poetry), during the first edition of the Literary Awards of the Bureau of National Propaganda [Secretariado de Propaganda Nacional (SPN)] in 1934. The purpose Antonio Ferro had to award a prize to Pessoa is known – a failed purpose, as we will try to prove. But not the details concerning the election process for the Poetry Prize, the individual votes of the juries, their personal characteristics, their appreciation of the different works, and their motivations. The recent finding of the minute of the jury meeting has brought new light to these and other aspects which until now had been obscure, even though some questions still remain unanswered. In this way we hope to contribute to the understanding of the historical context of the Prize awarded to 'Mensagem' by Portugal’s “New State” [Estado Novo] Propaganda office and to understand the meaning of this fact, always mentioned in Fernando Pessoa’s biographies.
