Partnership with Rhode Island College COEXIST and Rhode Island Department of Corrections

Description

Abstract:
Rhode Island College COEXIST is an initiative funded by the Rhode Island Office of Health and Human Services & the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program focused on: 1) HIV education, risk reduction, testing, and treatment 2) exploring other health issues associated with HIV through student-centered intensive case management (ICM) teams. One ICM team is designated to Intake Service Center (ISC) at Rhode Island Department of Corrections (RIDOC). Interviews with community members affected by HIV: Main findings: importance of HIV counseling and education –even in those that are tested HIV-; non-judgmental, patient providers; stigma surrounding HIV; lack of support/accessibility; HIV often closely intertwined with narratives of trauma and addiction; many individuals in community still believe that HIV diagnosis is a “death sentence” and have misconceptions about transmission; difficulty maintaining treatment through “transitions”; constant turnover of the prisoner population, competing values and potential systemic resistance; most individuals in Intake are “present for under 72 hours” and are subsequently released or transferred;
