- Todo sobre mi patria: La representación de la españolidad en el cine de Pedro Almodóvar
- Abstract
- Pedro Almodóvar is today’s most internationally acclaimed Spanish director, whose films have grossed millions of dollars worldwide and have been bestowed numerous prestigious accolades. A product of the frenetic Madrilenian cultural scene of the transition to democracy – known as the “movida” – Almodóvar’s films project an unabashedly cosmopolitan vision of a modernized, liberalized Spanish society, a full participant in the globalized cultural scene from which it had long been isolated. Almodóvar communicates this vision through his marked preference for the setting of the capital city, which situates his filmography firmly within an urban modernity that equates Madrid with the like of Paris, New York, or London. This focus recalls the symbolic importance of the city as the site of previous projects of centralized nation-building, to the detriment of the country’s peripherical nationalities. In a cosmopolitan society, such concerns are provincial at best. Alongside this clear affinity with cosmopolitanism, Almodóvar appropriates and subverts the stereotypical Spanish cultural iconography in order to legitimize his vision of the new Spain, an operation that necessitated the liberation of these symbols from the negative political connotations afforded them by Franco regime. By recasting these hallmarks of traditional Spanishness and by subverting the traditional state and church institutional authorities, Almodóvar seeks to update Spanish cultural for the modern cosmopolitan world.
