“We Don’t Need Your Pity, We Need Our Rights:” Understanding the Experiences of Sex Workers within the HIV Continuum of Care in the United States This study explores the experiences of sex workers within the HIV continuum of care (CoC) that is made up of HIV education, prevention, and treatment in the United States. Sex workers have long been framed as vectors of disease within the United States and this study looks to provide and understand alternative narratives of disease, disease prevention, and wellness among sex workers. This project explores the experiences of the HIV CoC specific to sex workers and situates these experiences in a historical context. This research examines how and why these experiences diverge from those of the general public and explores how the HIV CoC could be more sex worker friendly and what operating within a rights-based framework would look like for the HIV CoC. Carried out through community-based research, this project also highlights the importance of research that is developed by sex workers and informed by their understanding of the nuances of the sex industry and decades of experience in organizing to promote better conditions for sex workers. Through this human rights-based approach, this research explores how the HIV CoC can serve to alleviate or prevent discrimination faced in other sectors of a sex worker’s life.
