- Este texto introduz e reproduz um artigo publicado em Lisboa em 1883, intitulado “As novidades de New York e o Niagara no inverno”, da autoria do engenheiro português M. Eduardo de Laveley, com as impressões colhidas numa visita que realizou aos Estados Unidos no último trimestre de 1878, e que se centram sobretudo em dois pontos-chave da América: a cidade de New York e as Cataratas do Niagara, que descreveu magistralmente. As descrições e sobretudo os desenhos que as ilustram remetem-nos, sobretudo no caso de New York, para uma cidade que, em grande parte, já não existe, daí a pertinência deste texto que é uma autêntica janela para o passado.

- This text introduces and reproduces an article published in Lisbon in 1883, entitled “Novelties of New York and Niagara in the Winter,” and written by the Portuguese engineer M. Eduardo de Laveley, with prints gathered during a visit he made to the United States in the last quarter of 1878. The article focuses primarily on two key locations in America: New York City and Niagara Falls, which he describes masterfully. The descriptions and especially the sketches that illustrate the article transport us, especially in the case of New York, to a city that in large measure no longer exists—hence the relevance of this text, which is a genuine window into the past.
