    <mods:abstract lang="eng">Over the course of the summer of 2012, historians argued about the relative merits of one work in particular, the state of historical writing in Portugal in general, and the links between history, ideology, and the political commentary on current events that so many Portuguese academics, historians included, engage in. This should not have been a problem, and indeed some valid points were made along the way; but they were made in the context of a discussion initiated by slander, or something very close to slander, and which was shaped by political passions. As a result, the overall value of the incident as a whole was negligible, and it certainly did not amount to a badly needed debate over how differing visions of the past can coexist in present-day Portugal. This article attempts to chronicle the dispute, setting it into its wider context for the benefit of readers outside Portugal. In so doing, it will try to establish why the dispute was so bitter, a task related both to wider questions regarding the uneasy relationship between academic debate and mass media outlets, and to the fine line between historical argument and political disputes.</mods:abstract>
    <mods:abstract lang="por">Durante o verão de 2012, historiadores brigaram sobre os méritos de uma obra em particular, o estado da escrita historiográfica em Portugal no geral e os vínculos entre a história, a ideologia e o comentário político sobre eventos atuais nos quais tantos académicos portugueses (inclusive historiadores) se envolvem. Isto não deveria ter sido um problema. De facto, alguns pontos válidos surgiram neste processo, mas num contexto de uma discussão a partir da calúnia, ou algo próximo da calúnia, que foi moldado por fortes sentimentos políticos. Como resultado, o valor deste processo todo foi muito pouco, e não chegou a ser o debate de que tanto precisamos sobre a coexistência de diferentes interpretações históricas no Portugal atual. Este artigo procura recapitular a disputa e contextualizá-la para o benefício de leitores fora de Portugal. Ao fazer isso, tentará explicar por que a disputa foi tão acrimoniosa, tarefa que está ligada tanto a questões maiores sobre o relacionamento apreensivo entre o debate académico e a mídia de massa, como à linha entre argumento histórico e disputa política</mods:abstract>
