- In 1998, the Portuguese Communications Foundation signed a protocol with the University of Coimbra for the development of academic research into the history of communications, from the times predating the institutionalisation of the Postmaster-General in Portugal, at the dawn of the 16th century, down to the present day. In the past, Portuguese historiographers have paid scant attention to the subject of communications, particularly communications as they occurred in more far-off times. This piece presents and discusses bibliographic developments in the study of the history of Portuguese communications in the Middle and Modern Ages, arguing that a country’s communications system serves as a mirror of its development potential, as well as highlights its weak points; such a study not only relates the history of the Portuguese postal services, but also describes important components for improving our knowledge of the history of Portugal in a variety of areas, ranging from economic to cultural aspects.

- Em 1998, a Fundação Portuguesa das Comunicações assinou um protocolo com a Universidade de Coimbra para o desenvolvimento de investigação académica sobre a história das comunicações, desde os tempos anteriores à institucionalização dos correios em Portugal, no alvorecer do século XVI, até os dias de hoje. No passado, historiógrafos portugueses prestaram pouca atenção ao assunto das comunicações, especialmente em se tratando de tempos mais remotos. Este contributo apresenta e discute desenvolvimentos bibliográficos no estudo da história das comunicações portuguesas na Idade Média e Moderna, argumentando que o sistema de comunicações de um país serve como um espelho do seu potencial de desenvolvimento, bem como destaca os seus pontos fracos; este estudo não só diz respeito à história dos serviços postais portugueses, mas também descreve componentes importantes para melhorar o conhecimento da história de Portugal numa variedade de áreas, de aspectos económicos a culturais.
