<mods:title>Algorithm Application in Large Databases for Risk Factor Assessment in Pediatric Orthopaedic Surgery</mods:title>
</mods:titleInfo>
<mods:abstract>Researchers utilize large national databases to assess quality improvement and comparative effectiveness throughout many areas of medicine. The National Surgical Quality Improvement Program-Pediatric (NSQIPP) is a multi-institutional, 30-day outcomes-based surgical database used for quality improvement in pediatric surgery. However, some of these large databases often have inconsistent data collection from year-to-year and require a great deal of preprocessing and data cleaning before analysis can be performed. Problems of inconsistencies in large databases can include the addition of new variables; different variable names; and different International Classification of Disease (ICD) coding systems between different time periods. Biomedical informatics methodologies can help reduce inconsistencies in data organization and structure. The purpose of this study is to construct and test a generalized data extraction algorithm for the NSQIPP database that takes into account differences in data structure and organization to facilitate efficient querying of the NSQIPP data across multiple years.</mods:abstract>
