Security Considerations for Mobile Health Application Use
Abstract
My challenge outlines the lack of governance and review observed in the healthcare provider environment with the use of "market " or "consumer" clinical and medical mobile applications as resources for informing or influencing a course of care. My position is that as more mobile applications are readily adopted and pervasive within clinical practice they should be vetted like any other enterprise “sanctioned” resource. In a controlled provider environment, these applications should go through the same review process (security, integrity, functionality) as any other IT sanctioned software used in the clinical setting; in the patient safety context, I aspire to raise awareness against submission of protected health data and other personal data to application sources for which the validity and integrity of the solution is unknown. In conclusion, I will outline current and proposed methods for raising general awareness and governance for mobile health applications and hypothesize on the collective societal benefit of a more rigorous review process.
