- The Critical Elements of CEO Leadership That Will Improve Cybersecurity

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) is the central role that drives the corporate mission, vision and values, and connects the strategy to operational execution. As the key interface with the board of directors, the CEO is also accountable for setting an effective tone, organizational culture, and risk appetite that protects the best interests of customers, shareholders, colleagues, and the community. Given the enterprise-wide nature of cybersecurity risk, the CEO is pivotal in ensuring an effective threat mitigation strategy. Unfortunately, there is little guidance about the critical elements of CEO leadership required to improve cybersecurity above the accepted competencies for excellence in CEO leadership. Recent surveys highlight that cyber threats are among top concerns for CEOs and that CEOs are increasingly moving from awareness to action. However, more emphasis is needed on leadership competencies that will enable effective cybersecurity strategies to prevent, detect, and defend against cybersecurity threats. Ultimately, the CEO is responsible to the board of directors, shareholders, and customers for the success or failure of dealing with cybersecurity issues. Special thanks to Marshall N.
