Data Governance and Cybersecurity Crossroads
Abstract
The recent proliferation of technology (i.e., internet usage, mobile devices, or IOT devices) has resulted in an unprecedented accumulation of data. Complete, timely, secure, and accurate data is essential for both public and private organizations across varied industries and disciplines to operate effectively and efficiently in order to achieve their goals. Additionally, organizations increasingly rely on the use of confidential data to facilitate processes which require them to maintain privacy and security over this data, along with meeting a continually expanding list of compliance obligations. The Data Management Association International defines data governance as, “The exercise of authority and control over the management of data assets. It is the planning, supervision, and control over data management and use.” While data governance can include a variety of data management functions, for the purposes of this critical challenge project, I will focus on the functions of data privacy and data security management. The intent of this effort is to provide an overview of this topic, the current state of data governance today, its risks and implications, and to provide key principles, guidelines, and controls to manage the security and privacy of confidential data while meeting operating objectives and compliance obligations. Data governance is also essential to creating a sense of trust and confidence for internal data users who need accurate, timely, and insightful information, as well as amongst one’s customers who demand security and the responsible privacy-minded use of their data.
