- Abstract
- Abstract
(lang="eng")
- In the context of the celebrations of the supposed birth of Luís de Camões, rethinking the development of the epic poem in Portugal becomes particularly timely. Critics have already identified and analysed the intertextual elements between Mensagem and Os Lusía-das. This contribution does not aim to reflect specifically on classical inheritances and transfigurations in Fernando Pessoa’s poem; rather, it calls upon the debates on the new form of the epic poem that were then unfolding within English criticism, particularly around Lascelles Abercrombie’s essay The Epic: An Essay (1914). Its principles, especially when read in relation to the reflections of Edgar Allan Poe, may help to illuminate the modernist epic proposed by Pessoa and to identify a modelled architectural structure within Mensagem itself.
