- Abstract
- This plate depicts a soldier skating on the reservoir in La Villette, a park near Paris. The soldier is wearing the uniform of a lancer. Lancers were light cavalrymen who used lances, which hadn't been used in several centuries. Upon entering Poland with his army, Napoleon encountered cavalrymen highly skilled in the use of the lance. He then created regiments of lancers from Poland in 1809, used them extensively in battle, and was emulated by many other European armies. The uniform cap, worn by the soldier in this plate, is a Polish import, with a cylindrical body and a square top.
