Abstract
The gentleman is wearing tight fitting pants, that are lighter than his coat. His pants have boot straps as well, reminiscent of an English riding costume. He wears a short-waisted coat with basques (or tails) à l'anglaise, or longer tails. In his hand, he carries a haut-de-forme (or top-hat). He is dressed rather somberly, reminiscent of the spirit of the 'spleen' during the Romantic Period. The woman seated in front of the man wears a fur-trimmed blue dress and a white feather in her hair. Abstract source: Boucher, François. 20,000 Years of Fashion. New York: Harry N. Abrams, Inc, 1967.
