Abstract
The woman depicted on the right is wearing a dress with sleeves à la jardinière, fashionable from 1837, which were tightly fitted through the elbow and were wide from the elbow to the wrist. The waist of her dress is extremely narrow and corseted while her skirt is very wide. The woman depicted on the left wears a bonnet and a dress with a wide, bell skirt. She is draped in a large cashmere shawl and an apron. Abstract sources: Boucher, François. 20,000 Years of Fashion. New York: Harry N. Abrams, Inc, 1967. Ruppert, Jacques. Le Costume Français.
