- Abstract
- This satirical cartoon shows an "Étalagiste des ponts," or "bridge decorator," choosing what street artists may sell their work on his bridge. The construction of new bridges and the reconstruction of old ones, along with the creation of new "quais" under the architectural restrictions of the State during the late 18th and early 19th century, forced many Parisians to move around as old houses overlooking the river were destroyed and new ones erected, all at the will of a municipal government that couldn't make up its mind. As a result, such satires were not uncommon during the early nineteenth century.
