<mods:abstract>This print represents a technological experience held in Le Havre, in presence of Adolphe Thiers, former prime minister of France. The experiment seeked to test the centrifuge force, and to see if a dummy placed in the cart would fall down, or be maintained in place by that force. Later in the week, the installation became an attraction for the public of Le Havre, and a worker is said to have taken the place of the dummies. The experiment was designed with the hope to invent a supplementary braking system for trains. Cham made a caricature of it in the month following the publication of the article in L'Illustration.</mods:abstract>
