- Abstract
(lang="eng")
- My father, Alberto Machado da Rosa, was born in Angra do Heroísmo, Terceira, on January 31, 1924, and his childhood and early youth there were defined above all by a constantly growing desire to see beyond Terceira’s oceanic horizons and ultimately to escape its narrow confines. Both of his parents had lived and worked in the United States: his father, Álvaro, in Long Beach, California, and his mother, Maria da Conceição, in Lowell, Massachusetts, who was born and had spent much of her youth in Lowell, who spoke English with native ease, and who had given him early, effective instruction in that language. The past experiences of his family in the United States impinged on his own in another way: he was introduced to radical internationalist ideas at an early age by his maternal grandfather, who had worked under oppressive conditions in Lowell and had written and published revolutionary pro-labor poetry there.
