Analyzing YouTube as a Source of Psychosocial Support and Education for Patients with Vitiligo

Abstract

Vitiligo is linked to stigma, depression, suicidal risk, erosion of racial identity, and substance abuse. YouTube provides a platform where patients share and disseminate experiences. Content may be used by others afflicted as a source of information, advice, hope, community on realities of life with vitiligo We performed a content analysis of YouTube videos related to personal stories of individuals living with vitiligo. We hypothesized that YouTube clips focused on “living with vitiligo” will frequently ignore, under-report, misinform, and mislead viewers concerning the potentially catastrophic behavioral consequences of vitiligo.
