The quest represents the psychological evolution of the hero towards himself and can be summarized as follows: a separation from the community, an initiation into an unknown world where the hero faces obstacles, and reintegration into the community, once he overcomes them. I discuss here the use of this archetype in relation to the political situation of Brazil post-64 as seen in some of Callado's novels. I focus specifically on 'Sempreviva' (1981), showing how the hero's individual quest parallels a political one, the final objective of which is to bring about a change in the status quo to the benefit of the hero's community. Os romances de Antônio Callado apresentam um padrão mítico recorrente - o arquétipo da busca do herói. A busca representa a evolução psicológica do herói aproximando-se de si mesmo e pode ser resumida como: uma separação da comunidade, uma iniciação a um mundo desconhecido onde o herói enfrenta obstáculos e uma reintegração na comunidade quando ele consegue superá-los. Aqui discuto o uso deste arquétipo em relação à situação política do Brasil pós-64 quando vista em alguns romances de Callado.
