    <mods:abstract lang="eng">This essay is devoted to the study of the devaluation of the three fundamental Brazilian myths in "Triste Fim de Policarpo Quaresma" (The Sad End of Policarpo Quaresma). These are: the myth of the fertile land, the myth of the influence of the Indian in Brazilian culture, and the myth of the peaceful Brazilian. Policarpo Quaresma, the novel's main character, discovers the falsity of his myths, a discovery that is accompanied by the general degradation of his condition in life—the last step of this degradation being the death of Policarpo. His death is then the ultimate consequence of his awareness of the falsity of myth. This study explores the causes of Policarpo's death through a consideration of the serious and ambiguous consequences of myth, which, by serving as opium to the masses, becomes a powerful tool in the hands of the state that uses it to achieve its own ends. Recent articles by Krista Kamenetsky and Wolfgang Mieder deepen the great success of the Nazi state's appropriation of the pure-bred myth in order to promulgate and promote its ideology. The significance of Lima Barreto's contribution to the typology of myth is to have recognized both its destructive and constructive capacities.</mods:abstract>
    <mods:abstract lang="por">Este ensaio dedica-se ao estudo da desvalorização dos três mitos fundamentais brasileiros em ‘Triste Fim de Policarpo Quaresma’. Trata-se do mito da terra fértil, o mito da influência do índio na cultura brasileira, e o mito do brasileiro pacífico. Policarpo Quaresma, a personagem principal do romance, na sua aventura de procura do verdadeiro Brasil, descobre a falsidade dos seus mitos, descoberta que é acompanhada pela degradação geral da sua condição na vida, sendo o último passo desta degradação a morte de Policarpo. A sua morte então é a conseqüência última da sua tomada de consciência da falsidade do mito. O estudo aprofunda as causas da morte de Policarpo por meio de uma consideração das conseqüências sérias e ambíguas do mito, que, ao servir de ópio às massas, converte-se numa ferramenta poderosa nas mãos do Estado que o utiliza para atingir os seus próprios fins. Artigos recentes de Krista Kamenetsky e Wolfgang Mieder aprofundam o grande êxito da apropriação do mito de raça pura pelo Estado Nazi com o fim de promulgar e promover a sua ideologia. A significação da contribuição de Lima Barreto à tipologia do mito é ter reconhecido tanto a capacidade destrutiva como a construtiva do mito.</mods:abstract>
