- As Sérgio Buarque de Holanda has shown, books about America written by explorers and their chroniclers present the new world as a paradise. Authors such as Pero de Magalhães de Gandavo, Gabriel Soares de Sousa, Vicente do Salvador and Ambrósio Fernandes Brandão introduce another theme in their works as well, later reiterated in the poetry and prose of the 18th century (Antonil, Rocha Pitta, Manuel Botelho de Oliveira, Santa Maria de Itaparica): descriptions of nature intended to accentuate the commercial value of discovered resources. In addition to idealizing the natural setting, the chronicler, addressing colonizers and the Portuguese Crown, would invariably emphasize the lucrative benefits of land exploration. The romanticists from the 'Revista Niterói' generation re-examine this image of nature from an equally grandiose perspective, although completely eliminating the commercial attitude toward Brazil throughout the colonial period.

- Como mostrou Sérgio Buarque de Holanda, livros sobre a América escritos por exploradores e seus cronistas apresentam o novo mundo como um paraíso. Autores como Pero de Magalhães de Gandavo, Gabriel Soares de Sousa, Vicente do Salvador e Ambrósio Fernandes Brandão apresentam outro tema em suas obras, mais tarde reiterado na poesia e prosa do século XVIII (Antonil, Rocha Pitta, Manuel Botelho de Oliveira, Santa Maria de Itaparica): descrições da natureza destinadas a acentuar o valor comercial dos recursos descobertos. Além de idealizar o cenário natural, o cronista, dirigindo-se aos colonizadores e à Coroa portuguesa, invariavelmente enfatizava os benefícios lucrativos da exploração da terra. Os romancistas da geração “Revista Niterói” reexaminam essa imagem da natureza de uma perspectiva igualmente grandiosa, embora eliminem completamente a atitude comercial em relação ao Brasil ao longo do período colonial.
