<mods:abstract lang="eng">This essay analyses the ideological discourse that pervades the patriarchal basis of the Brazilian family in a class-oriented perspective, along the period that goes from the second half of the 19th century to the second half of the 20th century. Its starting point is the year of 1857, when José de Alencar's ‘O demônio familiar’ is first staged. It goes up to 1960, when other forms of questioning the patriarchal family model appear in plays by authors such as Nelson Rodrigues, Gianfrancesco Guarnieri and Dias Gomes.</mods:abstract>
