- Holding a PhD in French Literature from the Sorbonne and being a professor of Brazilian Literature at the Fluminense Federal University, where he also directs the graduate program, Silviano Santiago has taught at several universities in the United States and France. As an author of fiction, he wrote 'O Banquete' (1970), 'O olhar' (1974), 'Em liberdade' (1981) and 'Stella Manhattan' (1985); as a poet, he published 'Salto' (1970) and 'Crescendo durante a guerra numa província ultramarina' (1978). As an essayist, he published 'Carlos Drummond de Andrade' (1976), 'Uma literatura nos trópicos' (1978), 'Vale quanto pesa' (1982) and 'Nas malhas da letra' (1989). Serving as president of ABRALIC in 1990-92, he is one of the few intellectuals whose personal and professional integrity go together and are marked by a high level of permanent activity. In a country where the relation between intellectuals and power has been characterized by opacity and ambivalence, few have been able to think their time as himself. This interview was granted by him in November 1991, in Rio de Janeiro.

- Doutor em Literatura Francesa pela Sorbonne e professor de Literatura Brasileira na Universidade Federal Fluminense, onde também dirige os cursos de Pós-Graduação, Silviano Santiago lecionou em diversas universidades norte-americanas e francesas. No campo da ficção, escreveu 'O Banquete' (1970), 'O olhar' (1974), 'Em liberdade' (1981) e 'Stella Manhattan' (1985); no da poesia, publicou 'Salto' (1970) e 'Crescendo durante a guerra numa província ultramarina' (1978). Como ensaísta, publicou 'Carlos Drummond de Andrade' (1976), 'Uma literatura nos trópicos' (1978), 'Vale quanto pesa' (1982) e 'Nas malhas da letra' (1989). Presidente da ABRALIC em 1990-92, figura entre os poucos intelectuais cuja integridade pessoal e profissional andam juntas e se marcam por um nível dos mais elevados de atuação permanente. Num país em que as relações entre o intelectual e o poder têm-se caracterizado pela opacidade e pela ambivalência, poucos têm sido capazes de pensar o seu tempo como ele. Esta entrevista foi por ele concedida em novembro de 1991, no Rio de Janeiro.
