Abstract (lang="eng")
In evaluating the work of Paul B. Dixon, 'Retired dreams', the critic's innovative theses on the novel 'Dom Casmurro' stand out. The main argument is that Machado de Assis, from within the realist model, would have developed a writing conscious of the arbitrary and differential character of language, touching the heart of literacy by constructing the hero's speech as an epistemological instrument marked by rhetoric. This search for knowledge concerning the story lived with Capitu would not only express the condition of simulacrum of a literary work, denouncing the narrative instance, but would also expose the artificialism of socio-political and gender codes, allowing the contestation of patriarchal society through the means of an ambiguous narrative.
