Abstract (lang="eng"): Since the 1960s, Erico Verissimo had sketched that which would be the last novel of the so-called "Porto Alegre" cycle, from which he used some good portions in "Incidente em Antares" (Incident in Antares), published in 1971. Even while immersed in the writing of his memoirs, the idea of concluding both "Dança com máscaras" (Dance with masks) and "A hora do sétimo anjo" (The Hour of the Seventh Angel) continued to haunt him, and several times he resumed his notes and sketches, testing solutions to the compositional problems that the works still presented to him. His death in 1975 prevented him from completing his projects. From the novel, there were only four typewritten pages in final version, and a profusion of fragmentary versions, schematic sketches, scripts, and research notes. The fragment published here for the first time presents the four original pages and reconstitutes, from a series of handwritten drafts in English (with rare terms interspersed in Portuguese), the almost complete episode that justifies the title of the novel. The critical edition was made by Maria da Glória Bordini, based on the originals and drafts belonging to the Literary Collection of Erico Verissimo, curated by the Center for Literary Research of PUCRS, through a research project funded by CNPq and approved by Luis Fernando Verissimo, the son of the writer.
Abstract (lang="por"): Erico Verissimo esboçava desde os anos 60 aquele que seria o último romance do chamado Ciclo de Porto Alegre, do qual aproveitou algumas boas porções em "Incidente em Antares", publicado em 1971. Imerso na redação de suas memórias, mesmo assim a idéia de acabar "Dança com máscaras", depois "A hora do sétimo anjo", continuava a persegui-lo e diversas vezes ele retomou as notas e esboços, ensaiando soluções para os problemas compositivos que a obra ainda lhe propunha. Sua morte, em 1975, o impediu de realizar seu projeto. Do romance, restaram apenas quatro laudas datilografadas em versão definitiva e uma profusão de versões fragmentárias, esboços desenvolvidos ou esquemáticos, roteiros e notas de pesquisa. O fragmento aqui publicado pela primeira vez apresenta as quatro laudas originais e, em seguida, reconstitui, a partir de uma série de esboços manuscritos em inglês, com raros termos intercalados em português, o episódio praticamente completo que justifica o título do romance. A edição crítica foi realizada por Maria da Glória Bordini, com base nos originais e esboços pertencentes ao Acervo Literário de Erico Verissimo, cuja curadoria está a cargo do Centro de Pesquisas Literárias da PUCRS, através de um projeto de pesquisa financiado pelo CNPq, e aprovada pelo filho do escritor, Luis Fernando Verissimo.
