<mods:abstract lang="eng">In his fictional and theoretical work, Josué Montello realized the cherished dream of adolescence. "I have the feeling that my life proceeded as if it were a good novel that I had invented," says the writer from Maranhão, surrounded by more than a hundred books with his own signature. The author of "Os tambores de São Luís" was Director of the National Library, President of the Brazilian Academy of Letters, Provost of the Federal University of Maranhão, professor of Brazilian Literature in Madrid, Lima and Lisbon, Ambassador and Counselor of the Embassy of Brazil in Paris. Montello usually attributes to the four hours of sleep the ability to manage several public activities and a literary work capable of producing more than three thousand characters. On the morning of April 16, 1994, in Rio de Janeiro, he interrupted for a few hours, on the typewriter, the text "Confessions of a Novelist," his personal testimony about literary creation. In the interview, reflects on the period in which he decided to write, romanesque experiences in Brazil, the conquest of a captive audience and the novel technique, a vital feature of his work in the opinion of experts.</mods:abstract>
