Abstract (lang="eng"): Na história da poesia no Sul do Brasil, há nomes que, apesar da importância da sua produção poética, caem no esquecimento em virtude da pouca circulação dos seus trabalhos. Os poetas dos anos 50 dificilmente são lembrados. Entre eles, está Escosteguy, que participou do Grupo Quixote e cuja obra permanece quase inédita. Escosteguy nasce em 1916 em Santana do Livramento, RS. No início dos anos 30, passa a residir em Porto Alegre e cursa Medicina, concluindo a faculdade em 1938. Publica seus dois primeiros livros em 1951: "Entre imagens e canções" e "Adágio". Filia-se ao Grupo Quixote em 1952. Publica em 1955: "Canto à beira do tempo"; em 1956: "Poesia Quixote"; e em 1958: "A palavra e o dançarino". No início dos anos 60, transfere-se para o Rio de Janeiro, onde integra o movimento Nova Objetividade, dedicando-se às artes visuais e participando em mais de dez salões de Arte Moderna e em duas Bienais de São Paulo. Retorna a Porto Alegre nos anos 80, onde falece em 1989. A poesia de Escosteguy, na forma de haicais, já aparece no final dos anos 50 e é retomada, a partir de 1970, após o desenvolvimento das suas experiências em artes visuais. Ao reexercer a forma fundamentalmente alusiva do haicai, o poeta busca a participação do leitor, com o acréscimo de suas próprias associações. É este o traço ao mesmo tempo original e atual da sua poesia.
Abstract (lang="eng"): In the history of poetry in the South of Brazil, there are names that, despite the importance of their poetic production, fall into oblivion due to the scarce circulation of their works. The poets of the 1950s are hardly remembered. Among them is Escosteguy, who participated in Grupo Quixote and whose work remains almost unpublished. Escosteguy was born in 1916 in Santana do Livramento, RS. At the beginning of the 1930s, he moved to Porto Alegre and studied medicine, graduating in 1938. He published his first two books in 1951: "Entre imagens e canções" and "Adágio." Joined the Grupo Quixote in 1952. He published in 1955: "Canto à beira do tempo"; in 1956: "Poesia Quixote"; and in 1958: "A palavra e o dançarino." In the early 1960s, he moved to Rio de Janeiro, where he joined the New Objectivity movement, dedicating himself to the visual arts and participating in more than ten salons of Modern Art and two Biennials of São Paulo. He returned to Porto Alegre in the 1980s, where he died in 1989. The poetry of Escosteguy, in the form of haiku, already appears in the late 1950's and resumed, as from 1970, after the development of his experiences in visual arts. In re-exercising the fundamentally allusive form of haiku, the poet seeks the participation of the reader, with the addition of his own associations. This is the original and current trait of his poetry.
