- "Parallels," in the last part of 'The return of the black cat', 1946 (yet unpublished in English), answers Fernanda's question as to what held Brazil back while the United States, founded much later, surged ahead—and says it is the responsibility of the novelist to call attention to social ills, not because the writer can prescribe the cure but rather to create the need for a cure. Written as a letter to Fernanda—one of the main characters in 'Crossroads'—back in Brazil, the structure of this passage—in extremely long paragraphs encompassing several topics—obscures the various "parallels" that Verissimo delineates. I have taken the liberty to break up monologue to make the interior dialogue more obvious.
