Written as a letter to Fernanda—one of the main characters in 'Crossroads'—back in Brazil, the structure of this passage—in extremely long paragraphs encompassing several topics—obscures the various "parallels" that Verissimo delineates. I have taken the liberty to break up monologue to make the interior dialogue more obvious.
