Abstract (lang="eng")
In the analysis of Guimarães Rosa's ‘Meu tio o iauaretê’, a historian could professionally emphasize Rosa's context or the connections with society, politics, economy, culture and artistic expression. This essay aims to discuss the short story in terms of the Brazilian boundaries, not only those of political geography, but others such as the ethnic, the indigenous, the internal ones regarding the Indian who could metamorphose into a jaguar. It pays special attention to the use of dialogue, which recalls testimonies of rural subjects from the backlands in oral history, and to the loss of Indian identity, recovered as the jaguar, the totem of the Tacunyapé, the tribe of the caboclo’s mother.
