Abstract (lang="eng"): A storyteller who is passionate about the poetic potential of language and seeks to get rid of what he calls "the canga of action", the porto-alegrense João Gilberto Noll debuted with the short story book "O cego e a dançarina" in 1980, a beginning that was recognized and awarded by the Paulista Association of Art Critics, the National Book Institute and the Brazilian Chamber of Books. Noll graduated in Letters from UFRGS. In 1982, he won a scholarship from the University of Iowa's writers program in the United States. In 1984, filmmaker Murilo Salles made the film "Nunca fomos tão felizes," based on the story "Alguma coisa urgentemente" from the book "O cego e a dançarina." Noll's first novel is "A fúria do corpo," 1981. In 1988, he received a grant from the Vitae Foundation to write the novel "Hotel Atlântico," published in the following year. In the sequence, the books "Bandoleiros" and "Rastros de verão" came out. His career went strong in the 1990s with "O quieto animal da esquina" in 1991 and "Harmada" in 1993. His eighth book, "A céu aberto," earned him the 1997 Jabuti Prize. As from this year, he teaches Brazilian Literature at the University of California, Berkeley. In July and August, he was in Brazil, where he saw friends and relatives and did reading sessions on his last two books. In November, the publishing house Companhia das Letras intends to launch his Collected Works, a single volume with all of Noll's narratives. This interview took place at the hotel where Noll was staying in Porto Alegre, on August 2, 1997, a Saturday.

Noll é formado em Letras pela UFRGS. Em 1982, ganhou uma bolsa do programa de escritores da Universidade de Iowa, nos Estados Unidos. Em 1984,o cineasta Murilo Salles realizou o filme Nunca fomos tão felizes, baseado no conto "Alguma coisa urgentemente", do livro "O cego e a dançarina". O primeiro romance de Noll é "A fúria do corpo", de 1981. Em 1988, ele recebeu uma bolsa da Fundação Vitae para escrever o romance "Hotel Atlântico", publicado no ano seguinte. Na seqüência, saíram os livros "Bandoleiros" e "Rastros de verão". Sua carreira seguiu firme nos anos 90, com "O quieto animal da esquina", de 1991, e "Harmada", de 1993. Seu oitavo livro, "A céu aberto", rendeu-lhe o Prêmio Jabuti de 1997. Desde o início deste ano, leciona Literatura Brasileira na Universidade de Berkeley, Califórnia. Em julho e agosto passados, esteve de passagem pelo Brasil, onde reviu amigos e parentes e fez sessões de leitura de seus dois últimos livros. Em novembro, a editora Companhia das Letras deve lançar sua "Obra reunida", um único volume com todas as suas narrativas. Esta entrevista foi realizada no hotel em que Noll esteve hospedado em Porto Alegre, no dia 2 de agosto de 1997, um sábado.
