- This essay examines the trajectory of director Antunes Filho's work with Grupo Macunaíma, Brazil's—arguably Latin America's—most important theatrical troupe. The essay examines the plays: the theatrical adaptations of Brazilian fiction (‘Macunaíma’ in 1978 and ‘Augusto Matraga’ in 1986); the revolutionary stagings of Nelson Rodrigues (1981, 1984, 1989); the 1988 ‘Xica da Silva,’ staged in association with Brazil's centennial commemoration of the abolition of slavery; the Shakespearean productions (‘Romeo and Juliet’ in 1984 and ‘Trono de Sangue’/ ‘Macbeth’ in 1992); the 1991 ‘Nova Velha Estória’, based on ‘Little Red Riding Hood’; the 1994 staging of Jorge Andrade's ‘Vereda da Salvação’. The essay also considers the innovations in stagecraft brought about by Antunes / Grupo Macunaíma, as well as the impact on a new theatrical generation of encenadores.

- Este ensaio examina a trajetória do trabalho do diretor Antunes Filho com o Grupo Macunaíma, a companhia teatral mais importante do Brasil – e talvez da América Latina. O ensaio examina adaptações teatrais de ficção brasileira ("Macunaíma" em 1978 e "Augusto Matraga" em 1986); as encenações revolucionárias de Nelson Rodrigues (1981, 1984, 1989); a "Xica da Silva" de 1988, encenada em associação com a comemoração do centenário da abolição da escravidão no Brasil; produções de Shakespeare ("Romeu e Julieta" em 1984 e "Trono de Sangue" / "Macbeth" em 1992); a "Nova Velha Estória" de 1991, baseada em "Chapeuzinho Vermelho"; e a encenação de 1994 da "Vereda da Salvação" de Jorge Andrade. O ensaio também considera as inovações em encenações introduzidas por Antunes / Grupo Macunaíma, bem como o impacto em uma nova geração teatral de encenadores.
