An Exploration of the Screen Time Environment and its Relationship with Sedentary Behavior in Family Child Care Homes

Description

Abstract:
There is myriad evidence highlighting the dangers of screen time and sedentary behavior in young children. However, the screen time environment is underexplored and not well understood in Family Child Care Homes (FCCHs). The Environment and Policy Assessment and Observation tool (EPAO) was created to explore the child care environment in order to better understand the nutrition and physical activity environments, policies, and practices of child care settings. This study explored the screen time environment of FCCHs in Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Rhode Island involved in the baseline session of the Healthy Start trial to assess association between adherence to best practice guidelines and percentage of time spent in objectively measured sedentary behavior. Results showed that there is no association between levels of adherence to best practice scores and percentage of time children spend in sedentary behavior. However, results did indicate that children in FCCH settings are spending more than the recommended amount of time watching television, and on average are spending more than half of their day being sedentary. This suggests that other factors in the sedentary environment should be assessed to discover ways to improve the sedentary environment in FCCHs.
