- Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) affects 2-3% of the general population. Of those that seek treatment for the disorder, 10% experience refractory illness and remain severely disabled post pharmacotherapy and cognitive behavioral therapy. Neurosurgery, through neuromodulation or ablative procedures, provides an alternative treatment method for those looking to subdue their symptoms. Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) allows for the option of a reversible neuromodulation therapy. Targeting the ventral capsule/ventral striatum (VC/VS) in DBS procedures for OCD has been associated with significantly improved OC symptoms as well as an improved impact on verbal episodic memory. This study evaluated 19 subjects’ baseline and 1-year follow-up neuropsychological evaluations to assess for any changes in cognitive functioning from VC/VS DBS. The data displayed an absence of a significant decline in cognition, and instead a few statistically significant improvements in certain memory and intelligence functions. Observable significant changes in intelligence and memory in concurrence with the improvement of OC symptoms imply that DBS for the treatment of refractory OCD can improve a patient’s real-world functioning and therefore quality of life. Despite the limitations inherently provided with the study procedure, sample size, and sample demographics, chronic DBS to the VC/VS for OCD does not result in an impaired neuropsychology.
