- This thesis consists of two studies related to kidney disease. The first paper explored the prevalence and risk factors for proteinuria, an early marker for chronic kidney disease in the Orang Asli, an aborigine group in Peninsular Malaysia, and ethnic minority groups of Sabah and Sarawak, Malaysia. These groups may have less access to healthcare in general and screening for proteinuria may be an economical way to detect early kidney diseases for further mitigation measures.
The second paper compared survival of elderly (65 years and above) and the non-elderly with end stage renal failure. As dialysis are expensive and free dialysis in public centers are limited and have long waiting lists, many ESRF patients do not receive any renal replacement therapy. In the elderly population, dialysis is complicated because of co-morbidities, various beliefs and stigma and financial and logistical difficulties. We aimed to show that dialysis offers just as much benefit to the elderly as it does to the non-elderly population.
