- Constructing the Self through Imitation: Divine Aspiration and Supplantation in Darius, Augustus, and Horace
- Abstract
- Questions regarding immortality and death have been subjects of human inquiry for hundreds of years. The ancient Romans, influenced by Greek, Persian, and Egyptian predecessors and contemporaries, explored the intersection between divinity and mortality, reality and perception, and imitation and memory in monuments, temples, and poetic works. In my thesis, I examine these themes in Augustus’ Res Gestae and three selections from Horace’s Odes; I use Darius’ Behistun Inscription as a foil with which to examine both works, and enable more thorough interrogation of the themes.
