A Quick Guide to American Education for Japanese Immigrant Families

Abstract

For his capstone project, Kiyo created a brief education guide for Japanese immigrants in and near Rhode Island. He based the contents of the project on information gathered by listening to and speaking with immigrant Japanese mothers. Kiyo attended a monthly playgroup session for children with Japanese mothers who live in or near Rhode Island. Dr. Yoko Yamamoto, a professor in the Education Studies department who served as Kiyo's advisor, held an informal conversation with the mothers and discussed the ways in which the American education system differed from its Japanese counterpart. Kiyo later spoke with a few of the mothers and asked them to name a few facts about the American education system that they wish they had known prior to arriving to the United States. Based on the data collected from these interactions, Kiyo wrote the education guide that contrasts education systems (K-12 and higher education) in Japan and the United States in order to facilitate the educational adjustment for Japanese immigrants to America.
