- The theme of travel is a recurrent one in the literary production of Cecília Meireles and is present in the title of the book that solidified her place in the literary scene in 1938. It unfolds, on the one hand, in a geographic, literal sense: in the references to Portuguese navigation, to wanderings through cities in Europe, India, and elsewhere, as we see in 'Poems Written in India,' 'Travel Poems,' 'Italian Poems,' and 'Chronicles of a Journey.' On the other hand, travel assumes a metaphorical sense--that of the itinerary of an "I" in search of itsel or of an uknowable, unreachable utopia. In this second sense, the theme is most apparent in two symbols--the sea and the night--that are prolonged in networks of images, constructed with words from the same semantic field.

- O tema da viagem é recorrente na produção literária de Cecília Meireles, já presente no título do livro que a consagrou no cenário das Letras, em 1938. Desdobra-se, de um lado, em uma dimensão geográfica, literal, nas referências às viagens marítimas portuguesas, aos percursos em cidades européias, indianas e outras, cujos motivos estão consignados em 'Poemas escritos na Índia', 'Poemas de viagem', 'Poemas italianos' e nas 'Crónicas de Viagem'; de outro lado, a viagem assume um sentido metafórico, de itinerário de um "Eu" em busca de si mesmo ou de uma instância incognoscível, inalcançável, utópica. Nesse segundo sentido, o tema é balizado por dois símbolos – o mar e a noite – que se prolongam em redes imagéticas, construídas com vocábulos do mesmo campo semântico.
