- This study of the Machadian reading of Xenophon suggests that the presence of the consecrated Greek writer in 'Esau and Jacob' is more striking than has been realized: in addition to the chapter in which he is explicitly quoted, Xenophon would still be implicitly present both in the eccentric narrative situation of the novel - an artificial method of self-praise - as well as the theme of discord between siblings. In the end, this work proves that Greece in Machado de Assis is indeed "efficiently processed," not being something that only "embeds itself for adornment," but also "assimilates for nutrition." Setting itself apart from the others by being "nutritiously" implicit, Machadian Hellenism motivates us to interpret it as a true "Greek gift" from Machado de Assis to the "Greek mania" during the 'Belle Époque'.

- Este estudo da leitura machadiana de Xenofonte sugere que a presença do consagrado prosador grego em Esaú e Jacó é mais marcante do que se tem percebido: além do capítulo em que é explicitamente citado, Xenofonte ainda estaria presente, de modo implícito, tanto na excêntrica situação narrativa do romance – um método artificioso de auto-elogio – quanto no tema da discórdia entre irmãos. Afinal, este trabalho vem comprovar que a Grécia em Machado de Assis é, de fato, "eficazmente processada", não sendo algo que só "se incrusta para ornato", mas que também "se assimila para nutrição". O helenismo machadiano, ao destoar dos demais por ser "nutritivamente" implícito, motiva-nos a interpretá-lo como um verdadeiro "presente de grego" de Machado de Assis à "mania da Grécia" durante a ‘Belle Époque’.
