- Nascida no Rio, em 1942, Ana Maria Machado consagrou-se principalmente como escritora de obras voltadas para crianças. Fez Letras, exerceu o jornalismo e estudou com Roland Barthes na École Pratique de Hautes Études, em Paris – desta última experiência, resultou "Recado do nome", análise da obra de Guimarães Rosa. Estreou como escritora na revista Recreio, em 1969, e seguiu produzindo livros como "Raul da Ferrugem Azul", "Do outro lado tem mistério", "Bisa Bia Bisa Bel", "Era uma vez um tirano" e "De olho nas penas" (premiado com o Casa de Las Américas). Colecionou muitos prêmios nacionais e internacionais ao longo da carreira, mas o maior de todos veio este ano: Ana recebeu em Bolonha o prestigioso Hans Christian Andersen, considerado o Nobel da literatura infantil. Nesta entrevista, concedida em Porto Alegre em maio de 2000, Ana Maria Machado contesta a expressão "literatura infantil" e fala, entre outros temas, da relação entre leitura e poder, de sua convivência com Barthes, das cartas que recebe dos leitores e dos desafios que sua literatura propõe às crianças.

- Born in Rio in 1942, Ana Maria Machado devoted herself mainly to writing works for children. She got a degree in Letters, practiced journalism and studied with Roland Barthes at the École Pratique de Hautes Études, in Paris—from this last experience resulted "Recado do nome", an analysis of the work of Guimarães Rosa. She made her debut as a writer in the Recreio magazine in 1969, and went on to produce books such as "Raul da Ferrugem Azul," "Do outro lado tem mistério," "Bisa Bia Bisa Bel," "Era uma vez um tirano," and "De olho nas penas" (awarded with the Casa de Las Américas). She has collected many national and international awards throughout her career, but the biggest of them all came this year: Ana received in Bologna the prestigious Hans Christian Andersen, considered the Nobel of children's literature. In this interview, given in Porto Alegre in May 2000, Ana Maria Machado refutes the expression "children's literature" and speaks, among other themes, of the relationship between reading and power, her relationship with Barthes, the letters she receives from readers, and challenges that her literature proposes to children.
