- Born in Porto Alegre in 1945, Luiz Antonio de Assis Brasil made his debut as a writer in 1976 with "Um quarto de légua em quadro." He was already a university professor and had been a cellist of the Porto Alegre Symphony Orchestra. The writer would quickly overcome the lawyer and musician. Today, with more than ten books published, Assis Brasil is one of the most acclaimed novelists of Rio Grande do Sul. The author of "Videiras de cristal" and "Manhã transfigurada" is part of a tradition that includes Erico Verissimo, Cyro Martins and Josué Guimarães—the review of gaucho life and history by literature. In this interview, Luiz Antonio de Assis Brasil talks about this basic theme of his work—and about the relationship between History and literature, about the cultural identity of the state of Rio Grande do Sul and its displacement in Brazil, of his most recent books—"Concerto campestre" and "Breviário das Terras do Brasil"—and the novel he is currently writing. The interview was conducted in two stages—one in writing, and the other, complementing the responses of the first, recorded in May 1999.

- Nascido em Porto Alegre, em 1945, Luiz Antonio de Assis Brasil estreou como escritor em 1976, com "Um quarto de légua em quadro". Já era professor universitário e havia sido violoncelista da Orquestra Sinfônica de Porto Alegre. O escritor rapidamente se sobreporia ao advogado e ao músico. Hoje , com mais de dez livros publicados, Assis Brasil é um dos mais consagrados romancistas do Rio Grande do Sul. O autor de "Videiras de cristal" e "Manhã transfigurada" integra-se a uma tradição que inclui Erico Verissimo, Cyro Martins e Josué Guimarães – a revisão da vida e da História gaúchas pela literatura. Nesta entrevista, Luiz Antonio de Assis Brasil fala sobre esse tema básico de sua obra – e das relações entre História e literatura, da identidade cultural gaúcha e seu deslocamento no Brasil, de seus mais recentes livros – "Concerto campestre" e "Breviário das Terras do Brasil" – e do romance que está escrevendo atualmente. A entrevista foi realizada em duas etapas – uma delas por escrito, e a seguinte, complementando as respostas da primeira, gravada em maio de 1999.
