- Rosa's novel should be looked at from an urban point of view implicated in the great desert of the Sertão, since to achieve some understanding on our belonging to someplace we should be ready to abandon it, or to get lost in it if we were to find our way in it. ln the long talk of Riobaldo to his city visitor, the Sertão becomes the all-comprehensive space about which nothing can be stated for certain, a hybrid space of undecidability and errance. The profuse antinomies of the narrative, such as civilization/wilderness, inland/coast or sacredness/damnation, are neutralized in the several crossroads that connect the diegesis, trying to say a Brazilian paradoxical identity which is, although it is not one.

- O romance de Rosa deve ser encarado de um ponto de vista urbano implicado no grande deserto do Sertão, pois, para alcançar algum entendimento sobre nossa pertença a algum lugar, deveríamos estar prontos para abandoná-lo, ou para nos perdermos nele se encontrarmos nosso caminho nele. Na longa conversa de Riobaldo com o visitante da cidade, o Sertão torna-se o espaço todo-abrangente sobre o qual nada se pode dizer com certeza, um espaço híbrido de indecidibilidade e errância. As múltiplas antinomias da narrativa, como civilização/deserto, interior/costa ou sacralidade/danação, são neutralizadas nas várias encruzilhadas que conectam a diegese, tentando indicar uma identidade brasileira paradoxal que é, embora não seja.
