Exploring the Impact of Community-based Interventions on Contraceptive Utilization and Family Planning Health Literacy in the Iganga District of Eastern Uganda
Abstract
In response to high unmet need for family planning methods in rural Uganda, Uganda Village Project (UVP) implemented the Healthy Village Initiative (HVI). The HVI surveys rural Ugandan households before and after a 3-year programmatic intervention in order to assess changes in family planning health literacy and contraception utilization. This study found that the HVI facilitated an increase in contraceptive utilization, increase in family planning health literacy and decrease in unmet need for contraception. Community-based outreaches led by community members and health workers can be effective in improving access to contraception, utilization of contraception and health literacy surrounding contraception.
