The Costs of the Global War on Terrorism: Indirect Deaths and Healthcare Infrastructural Damage in Iraq and Afghanistan
Abstract
While the researchers involved in the Brown University Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs Costs of War Project have published extensively on the human costs of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan in terms of numbers of direct combat deaths on all sides attributable to violence, less research has been done on the non-violent “indirect deaths” resulting from the larger effects of the wars on the normal functioning and everyday infrastructure of Iraq and Afghanistan. Within the broader literature focused on the effects of these wars, the vast majority of health and healthcare-focused inquiries are often aimed at understanding the experiences of American soldiers rather than the civilians living in Iraq and Afghanistan. This research therefore seeks to systematically examine the literature on the health effects and damage to the healthcare infrastructures of Iraq and Afghanistan caused by the War on Terror in order to make tangible policy recommendations regarding what needs to be done in order to rebuild those systems and what the American responsibility and role in that process should be in the coming years.
