A2025-025 Danny Fyffe arrived in the UK from Jamaica in the early 1950s, first settling in Wolverhampton where he completed his schooling. At around 19 years old, he moved to Liverpool, which soon became his lifelong home. In 1969, he opened the first of three grocery shops with a business partner—two on Granby Street and one on North Hill Street. The current Granby Street location, opened in 1974, has remained a local landmark ever since. Over the decades, the shop has evolved, offering a wide range of produce from around the world while staying true to its Jamaican and Caribbean roots. Shoppers can still find goat meat, cow foot, mutton, spiced buns, Jamaican crackers, sugar apples (sweetsop), soursop, as well as staples of West African cooking such as palm oil and egusi. For many, Granby Continental Store is more than a place to shop—it’s a social hub. Danny’s long-time colleague, Tony Kavannagh, first met him as a child in the 1970s, passing the shop on his way to school. One day, Danny invited him to join a trip to the Cash and Carry, sparking a working relationship and friendship that has lasted nearly 50 years. Danny, who has one daughter, remains proud of the role his store plays in Liverpool 8, serving generations of families and keeping cultural food traditions alive.
