The following selection is clipped from the Daily Califomian : &quot;President Wheeler's warm championship of the sport of rowing recalls the attempt made at the opening of the university to make this one of the intercollegiate events of the year. Senator Stanford warmly favored it and attempts were made to organize a crew. The training for the most part was done 011 the rowing machines of the gymnasium, as is done in many of the Eastern colleges, as the only available place for practice was Lake Lagunita, and this was totally inadequate to the needs of the crew. The difficulties which faced the athletes of six years ago, are still present, and it is these difficulties which precludes the formation of a crew at the present time. There is no available place for training. At Cornell, where rowing has been highly specialized, threefourths of the training is done on a narrow inlet which leads through the marshes.. At Harvard and Yale water facilities are conveniently located, and at the State University of Wisconsin there is a choice of four lakes for practice. Here is where the difficulty lies with Stanford. There are no water facilities that are accessible. The marshes contain no inlets suitable for practice, and the use of the bay is for several reasons not feasible. Its distance from the college makes it impracticable in the first place, but the more serious objection is the expense which would be entailed in providing suitable quarters. On account of the condition of the mud flats at low tide, it would be necessaiy to build a wharf a mile out, and this, at the present time, is out of the question. The Faculty athletic committee are heartily in favor of promoting rowing as a college sport, and are essentially in sympathy with President Wheeler's views, but realize that until a suitable training place can be found, nothing can be done.&quot;">

For the past two weeks the men have been in training under the direction of Dr. Parker and as a result are in first-class condition. It was feared that much of the interest in the meet would be lost owing to the prohibition of the cane rush by President Faunce. The athletic board proposes to substitute a football rush instead, and this should be robust enough to suit the most ardent sportsman. The whole of two lower closses are to be allowed to participate in the contest, which is to be governed by Association Football rules. Any man fouling by carrying the ball will be ruled out of the game and not allowed to again enter the play. The ball may be advanced by any other method and the side scoring the largest number of goals shall be declared the winner. Referees will be appointed from the two upper classes to see that there is no unnecssary roughness and to decide on fouls. The game will be one 30--minute half. If the two classes would organize so as to obtain some system in their play much interest would be added to the game. Therfore, the athletic board proposes that the classes hold meetings and determine the style of play that shall be followed. With such an organization many of the disagreeable features of a cane rush will be done away with and still the football rush will be sufficiently &quot;warm&quot; to satisfy the members of both classes. Let every man turn out and help support his class.">

<div ID="DIVL96" TYPE="TEXT" ORDER="2" LABEL="Brown's football game with Harvard on Saturday has been the occasion of considerable comment, both favorable and otherwise. The Herald is in receipt of communications concerning the game of widely varying sentiment. One alumnus writes: &quot;I hope you will utter a strong protest in your columns against the 'slugging' game played * * * Saturday by the Brown team. Even a victory on these tactics would have been bought at too dear a price, for Brown cannot afford to get the odium fastened upon her that such playing brings.&quot; We take it for granted that the writer was present at the game. If so, he must have observed two things; first, that the game was an unusually fierce one; second, that both sides several times &quot;exchanged compliments,&quot; as a Boston paper puts it. The Herald does not desire to commend this style of play as a model to be followed in future games, but it believes it to be manifestly unfair to attach all the &quot;odium&quot; to the Brown eleven. Harvard was just as responsible for any &quot;slugging&quot; that may have occurred as was Brown; indeed, if we are to believe our eyesight, the incident that led to the disqualification of a Brown player was directly occasioned by the unsportsmanlike conduct of a member of the Harvard eleven. ... We are sure that the writer of the communication from which we have taken the liberty of quoting has only the best interests of his alma mater at heart, and it is undoubtedly true that such method of play as he has mentioned is liable, in the long run, to injure the good name of any college, but we would suggest that he has been just a bit over-anxious, and">

<div ID="DIVL162" TYPE="TEXT" ORDER="4" LABEL="Next year the Harvard crews training on the Charles river will have a handsomer and more commodious headquarters than the members of any previous crews have enjoyed. It will cost $30,000, this amount having been subscribed by the Harvard graduates residing in New York. The structure will have a frontage on the river of 140 feet, running back 100 feet and will contain all the modern improvements. On the ground floor there will be a large workshop, the larger part of the room being devoted to storage room for boats and shells. A large rowing tank will occupy the other part of the building. From a long hallway on the river side of the house two stairways will lead to the second floor, which will be devoted to lockers, ante-rooms and shower baths. The house will be heated by steam and lighted by electricity. It is expected that it will be completed by Jan. 1. A fire early yesterday morning in the barn of R. C. Davison seriously threatened the Psi Upsilon chapter house. Quick work by the fire department happily averted the danger.">
